A data collection system is precisely what it sounds like. Although it can be produced in numerous ways, it basically will accomplish the same result for many different companies, however, used in different ways. While the organization is sometimes as easy as adding names to your telephone address book in alphabetical order, many times its as complex as the data base of the U.S. government. Whatever the level is of the task at hand, the data collection will involve the same goal.
And that’s to organize data in a well thought out method that will permit you to use the data you need without having to sift through each and every piece of collected information. Many times, depending on the collection system used, the collection and organization is done in various fashions.
The term “database” is used quite loosely in our society today. While the terminology is the same, there can be huge differences in different data base systems. Some are very simple while others are very complex but the end result is always the same. A database is used for the collection and storing of data. Long ago, there was a time when library books contained a card in an inside pocket. You had to either punch or mark the card when you decided to check out the book.
That became a method of collecting data. After you checked out the book, a date was put inside as to when it was due back at the library. The card was then filed in a file box, usually by date of when the book was due. The organization method was best utilized by placing the cards in numerical order, from one to thirty-one. This process permitted the librarian to know which books were due on any given day of the month.
Now days, computers are used to check out the books we want so the system has been changed to a computer based data collection system. As times have progressed, so have our methods of organization.
Do All Businesses Use a Data Collection System?
All businesses that plan on success, will use a method of collecting and organizing important data. Today the method used is computer based. This data collection system will collect and organize pertinent information such as the names and addresses of customers, and at the same time, keep record of the data of sales, receivables and employee time cards. This information is collected in the same way, but many times, it is used differently.
